Justin, I did a similar project a while back and was able to solve the
problem quite simply. My object wasa relatively simple on, a bottle,
which interacted with a real table.... in fact everything but the bottle
was real. It was sitting on a glass table which also had other real
objects laying on it and was casting a nice reflection. I had to make my
bottle have a reflection on a real table so that it matched up with the
other reflections. I ended up just cloning my original bottle, darkening
it a bit, and then placing it on the table appropriately. It looked
quite good as a reflection. The same thing would apply for a shadow.in a
real world setting. You may want to give that a try.
